Blackberry Jalapeno BBQ Sauce - Your New Favorite BBQ Sauce

Fruit and BBQ have always gone together. Peach, cherry, and apple sauces have earned their place alongside smoked meats, but blackberries deserve a lot more attention. Their deep, slightly tart flavor brings richness without turning your sauce into dessert.

For this version, we leaned into those natural flavors with fresh blackberries, real vanilla bean, roasted jalapeño, and a splash of lemon yuzu juice to brighten everything at the end. The result is a sauce that's sweet, smoky, tangy, and just complex enough to have people asking what makes it different.

This sauce was built specifically for our apple-smoked pulled pork, but it works just as well on ribs, chicken, pork chops, burgers, or even as a dipping sauce for smoked wings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 roasted jalapeño, finely diced

  • 2 tsp granulated onion

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp molasses

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp coarse black pepper

  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 to 1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped

  • 1 to 2 tsp lemon yuzu juice (fresh lemon juice also works)

  • Kosher salt, to taste

Roast the Jalapeño

Roasting softens the heat while adding another layer of smoky flavor.

  • Place the jalapeño on the grill or smoker.

  • Roast until lightly blistered and softened.

  • Allow to cool.

  • Finely dice.

Build the Sauce

Everything comes together in one saucepan.

  • Combine the blackberries, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, granulated onion, garlic, brown sugar, molasses, smoked paprika, black pepper, cinnamon, vanilla bean seeds, and the vanilla pod.

  • Stir well.

  • Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.

Simmer

Slow cooking gives the berries time to break down and the flavors time to blend.

  • Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes.

  • Stir occasionally.

  • Lightly mash the blackberries as they soften.

Blend

This transforms the sauce into a smooth, rich BBQ sauce.

  • Remove the vanilla bean pod.

  • Blend until smooth using an immersion blender or standard blender.

Optional - for an extra silky sauce, strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove the blackberry seeds.

Finish the Sauce

The final ingredients brighten everything up.

  • Stir in the roasted jalapeño.

  • Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of lemon yuzu juice. Fresh lemon juice also works well.

  • Taste and adjust with additional salt, vinegar, or brown sugar if needed.

What Makes This Version Different?

Most fruit BBQ sauces lean heavily on sweetness. This one focuses on balance.

The blackberries provide natural tartness while the molasses adds traditional BBQ depth. Real vanilla bean rounds out the berry flavor without making the sauce taste sweet, and the roasted jalapeño contributes a gentle warmth that builds in the background instead of overpowering the sauce. The final splash of citrus wakes everything up and keeps each bite tasting fresh.

Final Thoughts

This ended up being one of my favorite homemade BBQ sauces we've made. It's familiar enough to pair with classic smoked meats but different enough to fit perfectly into our Unexpected BBQ series.
